The cross represents the last station of the Penitential Way of the Cross, which departed from the church and passed through Cerrito, Guillermo Sáenz and Calvario streets. There were 14 stations along the route, and some of them had a small alcove and a crucifix. Of these alcoves, only the CROSS OF THE CORNER OF THE LORD remains. Although it was accidentally knocked down by a lorry on the 23rd of December of 1973, the neighbour Emilio Costillo picked up the crucifix and rebuilt the alcove in the same place in 1982.

In August 1936, due to the Spanish Civil War, this cross was thrown into the Olivar. That night it was picked up by a neighbour, who hid it in a plot of his property until the end of the war, when he returned it to its place.

In 1987, as part of the works carried out on a section of Valencia del Mombuey road, the town council agreed to restore the circular square, where the cross is located, and its steps. From here, there is an excellent panoramic view of the town.

Nowadays, two religious events are still held in this popular square: the Blessing of Palms on Palm Sunday (since 1990) and the Station of the Penitential Way of the Cross on Good Friday.
